Devil May Cry 1 Trivia

1. The Devil May Cry story was based off of the old poetry book, A Divine Comedy/Dante's Inferno. Dante was named after the author and character, Dante Alighieri. Vergil was named after Vergil, and Trish and Eva were named after Beatrice.

2. This Devil May Cry game was originally going to be Resident Evil 4. Almost all of the enemies in Devil May Cry are a reference to Resident Evil.

For example, the Marionettes represent the zombies since they're slow, the Blades represent the Hunters, and the Beezlebubs, Cyclopses, and Phantoms all represent the giant bugs.
And to add, Dante represents Leon, and Vergil (Nelo Angelo) represents Wesker.

Then later, Leon got changed to a guy named Tony, which is the Dante we know, then Tony's name became an alias for Dante.

3. In the 1st scene where Trish falls from the sky, there's a shop to her left with a sign that says, "Dino Crisis 2".

4. In Bayonetta, there are a few Devil May Cry references such as:

- Bayonetta saying Dante's one line, "Let's rock baby".

- The gameplay.

- Luka's one pet cat is named Trish (or girlfriend he calls her)

- Luka's one relative is named Antonio Redgrave (Dante's alias)

- There are quite a bit of references of Eva and Sparda.

- There's a thing at the end of the credits that says, "Team Little Angels" instead of "Team Little Devils" from the DMC1 credits.

5. Dante is aged 28-29 in this game.

6. Besides Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance had some references to Devil May Cry as well:

- Raiden's human concept has a similar facial concept and hairstyle like DMC2 Dante.

- Raiden even taunted a couple times like Dante would do before the Blade Wolf Fight and fight against the officers of the one city.

- Some of Raiden's move sets are very similar to some of Dante's moves when he uses Ifrit.

7. According to Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry, this is what he posted on Facebook:
"In the one scene, Dante will say "devils never cry". And yes, it is quite beautiful. But take away the poetic irony for a minute and look at it more accurately. The point is, devils don't cry, so how is Trish able to cry?
Perhaps when Dante said it, he was being figurative and not literal?

*Note - Dante has shed tears before as well, but he is half human to begin with, so there's no comparison.
Trish however was created by Mundas, so what's the exception?

But then again, think about the title, Devil "May" Cry, is there some deeper meaning to the name?"

8. If you reverse the mission start song in DMC3, it turns out to be the DMC1 mission start song.

9. According to Hideki Kamiya, the female silhouette of the logo on the Devil May Cry shop is just a "cool girl", and in-universe is not meant to represent Trish.

10. The relationship between Trish and Dante is often interpreted by fans to be romantic in nature, however; Kamiya denies this is the case.

11. This is a concept art from the game, Bayonetta. That man at the table playing poker is Enzo Ferino (a character usually mentioned or shown in certain books of the Devil May Cry series), wearing what appears to be Dante's coat, with his one sword sitting on his left, and a strawberry sundae:

12. This game was originally going to be called, Karnival, with Dante as his "Tony" name still.

13. The unlockable "Sparda" costume is actually a reference to one of the earlier designs for Dante when there was going to be a time lapse in the story that takes place in the future, with Dante wearing that outfit and having more of Vergil's hairstyle and personality.

14. This game's fighting styles/moves was inspired by Virtua Fighter.

15. This game was originally going to have quick time events. Due to time constraints, it couldn't happen.

16. Griffon's concept was based off of the mythical creature/cryptid, Thunder Bird. Also known as Roc, Rocho, Ruc, Rukk, Rokh, Rukh, Rook, Simurgh, Garuda, Rath, and Pheonix.

17. According to a Twitter post done by Hideki Kamiya, he may have possibly confirmed that Mundus' powers are of universal equivalence.

18. CapCom's happened to change the lore of Ebony & Ivory's creators a few times. At first it was an unnamed friend that made the models of the guns while Dante did the finishing touches (According to a Japanese company that makes replicas of fictional weapons). Then it was Nell Godstein (The possible unnamed friend) that made the guns (According to the DMC1 novel). Then it was Dante himself (According to the 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts book), and back to Nell Goldstein (According to DMCV).

19. All textures used in this game were from photographs taken by the staff (mostly Makoto Tsuchibayashi, the character creator of this game). For example, the textures of Dante's pants in one of the more detailed concept artwork were taken from a photograph of Yusuke Hashimoto's (Tsuchibayashi's colleague) pants. And textures of the coat were taken from Yasuko Shimoda's (background designer of this game) coat.

20. According to the 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts book, Trish was most likely a pawn from the moment Mundus created her, and was not under his influence until a later time. It states in the book, "When confronted with Dante's love, her heart awakens to her own inherent humanity and the spell binding her is broken".

21. Besides Tony being an alias of Dante, Tony Redgrave was originally going to be Dante's sidekick right when they changed Dante's Tony name to Dante.

Holy Molly man... You did an AMAZING work here. Especially the part of Tony Redgrave becoming like Vergil in time skip...
Anyways i had done fair amount of research on Resident Evil 4: Stylish edition that eventually became DMC.

I know that Trish was originally Aisha Redgrave-Tony Redgrave partner, foster sister and possibly lover (judging from the art work). While Eva was separate character entirely. What i want to know is that, what kind of role Eva plays
in Resident Evil 4: Stylish version? Does Eva plays the role of villain, since she was wife of Oswell Spencer (the game main villain)

Also what forces Tony Redgrave to become head of Umbrella Corporation and become villain of Resident Evil??? Wasn't he suppose to be a good guy..

Also does Paul Redgrave survive after the events of Resident Evil 4: Stylish? Or Paul dies at the end of Resident Evil 4: Stylish?

Finally was Oswell Spencer successful at launching Progenitor Virus (Nightmare from DMC 1) on the world near the end of Resident Evil 4: Stylish???

Another DMC quote in Bayonetta was "Flock off, featherface!" before one of the boss battles.

    For #2
Oh, that wasn't a correction or anything like that. More of a 'did you know that...'

There is nothing concrete about this but from what I understood it was producer Mikami who provided that description for the replicas. The one thing I DO know is that those were official Capcom licensed replicas. I can't even really tell you if the script was really from those replicas since it's been almost 18 years since DMC1 content was new and mostly no one's bothered to archive or preserve it. I really have nothing but memory to back this up. There are no reliable sources left but I've always thought that this was a fascinating look at abandoned canon for the game before it left the hands of those who originally created it since I still get an air of the 'personality' of the first game more on tidbits like this than even the official sequels.

Yeah. Everything in the artbook is from people who are still working at Capcom and nothing from those that left. The information is actually only available from the first art book for DMC1 called Graphic Edition, which was never officially translated and a lot of its content didn't make it to the 3,1,4,2 book. I had to do a lot of google to find her name.
If you're interested this is the archive of that info from years upon years ago.

    @berto:
For #2, I did not say that the marionettes were originally 'going' to be zombies. I was saying that they 'represent' the zombies due to their slow and sluggish nature. I would like to know where you got the information of them originally going to be robots because that's a first I've heard.

For #3, I happen to have an image of the Dino Crisis Easter Egg on my Facebook page with the same website name.

For #11 thanks for pointing that out because I meant to change that information for awhile now.

For #18 companies that make replicas aren't in charge of the lore of these characters' profiles, only the creators. And CapCom's changed their concept a few times. From what we've seen in DMCV's information now, looks like Dante's guns were produced by Nell Goldstein, so I'll have to get rid of that trivia information now.

For #21 interesting. First I've heard of this character's name. I happen to have the 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts book and it never mentioned her name.

Actually, the marionettes were originally going to be robots but that wasn't scary so marionettes it was.
    #3
No shit? I gotta go look into this one.
    #11
That's not actually Dante. If you read the caption in the concept art book the artist says that's actually director Kamiya losing to Enzo.

There is a Japanese company that made replicas of game and anime guns called Poseidon and in the packaging for E&I it describes a different history of the guns before the novel was written. Here's a translation of that transcript:

(I honestly can't verify that this info is accurate because it's both old and hard to look into but I honestly think it's true)

In one of the scenarios Tony had a female partner named Aisha.
