Devil May Cry 4/Special Edition Trivia

1. Daniel Southworth (Vergil) did NOT do the voice of Credo, but he did the mo-cap of Credo, while T.J. Rotolo did the voice.
Plus he also auditioned to be the voice of Dante and Nero but didn't get the part due to him sounding too much like Vergil.

2. Mission 11's name: "The 9th circle" makes reference to Lucifer's circle in Dante's Inferno/Divine Comedy. Thinking about it, it'd be more fitting to say the "8th", since that's where most of the giants are. In the 8th circle, giants are kept encaged inside tall, circular towers. Some almost at their height, some not. And the Saviour is a giant inside a large tower, where only the top of its head goes further than the tower.

3. In this game, Dante is 35-40 years old.

4. Laura Napoli did NOT do the voice of Lady and Kyrie but she did the mo-cap for them while Kari Walhgren did Lady's voice, and Stephanie Sheh did Kyrie's voice. As for Special Edition, Kate Higgins did both mo-cap and voice for Lady.

5. According to the Devil's Material Collection and the 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts books, CAPCOM was originally going to give Nero and Dante a 2nd devil trigger form called "Perfect Devil Trigger", where their demon side controls them, making them more powerful and wreaking havoc. But Nero controls his demon side more.

6. The Scarecrows are filled with black-misty bugs, inspired by the Soot Sprites from My Neighbour Totoro.

7. Sanctus' name has never been said in this game....Ever. He's only called "His Holiness", or "Your Holiness". Then again, Sanctus means Holiness in Latin.

8. The Saviour was not originally going to be Sparda, it was originally going to be Kyrie, as it shows female saviour models in the Devil's Material Collection art book. And Morihashi Bingo (scenario writer for DMC 2, 3, and 4), mentioned that Kyrie was originally going to be a goddess.

9. Kyrie's, Gloria's, Credo's, Agnus', and Sanctus' names represent a movement to a Christian mass.

10. Nero was originally going to be named Rodan (pronounced Row-dawn).

11. According to Hideki Itsuno (director of DMC 2, 3, and 4), in Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, Trish and Lady were not meant to be playable characters. But in the original game, Trish and Lady's appearances were only going to be shown in the first cutscene with Dante instead.

12. Johnny Bosch (Nero) was originally going to voice as Dante in DMC4 but didn't get the part due to him sounding too young for an older character.

13. There's also a height chart for the characters (see one of the galleries for DMC4), and it looks like Dante may be about the same height as in DMC3, or about 10 centimeters taller according to the Anime character height chart (see that chart in the Anime trivia).

14. In Agnus' clipboard, Agnus wrote something interestingly strange. He wrote for the title, "Nero = Dante".

15. There are a few unused taunts in this game:

16. That evil force in Nero's devilish arm could be a manifestation of Vergil's soul, according to Vergil's ending, showing the silhouette of Nero's devil trigger trailing behind him.
Some sources have stated (including the Devil May Cry Wiki) that Nero's devil trigger was supposed to be a manifestation of Nero's soul, but it could most likely be a mistranslation.

17. According to the Devil May Cry 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts book, and Ruben Langdon (Dante), Dan Southworth (Vergil), and Johnny Bosch (Nero) at RangerStop 2015, Nero has been confirmed as Vergil's son. Besides the confirmation on Nero's profile, they even hinted it in one of Nero's concept arts where the caption says, "Wooden Sword. Considering who's son he is..." However, in the CapCom Encyclopedia book, the confirmation is not mentioned.
At RangerStop 2015, the voice actors discuss about the confirmation (at the 43 minute mark of the video on Youtube).

18. Bael and Dagon were originally going to be lesser demons. They were made into bosses later on due to how many move sets they added. The antennae are actually scrapped nude models of Kyrie.

19. Even though Hideki Kamiya (creator of the 1st Devil May Cry game) left CapCom during production of DMC3, he still contacted a few of the developers for this game through email and social media, and threw some ideas at them.

20. Credo was originally going to be the final boss of this game, with Gloria being one of his sidekicks, including Agnus. But Morihashi Bingo insisted that it would cause problems, like the situation being too hard for Kyrie, causing her to resent Nero. It would also mean that it would have been a rehash of the whole "family betrayal" thing from DMC3. So he gave them different roles, and altered Gloria to be Trish in disguise.

21. Coincidentally, Sanctus was originally going to be named Pope Benedict before the real Pope Benedict got elected.

22. According to Morihashi Bingo, Nero was originally going to have a different personality, with it being Sherlock Holmes-type, and the inclusion of sipping tea while fighting. But the rest of the team didn't think it was a good idea.
Another personal trait Nero was originally going to have, according to Yuichiro Hiraki (one of the modelers of DMC 2, 3, and 4), was going to be based on how the player plays as Nero. If the player does good, Nero will be his regular self as we presently see, but more knightly. If the player does bad, Nero would descend into madness and darkness, making him a really psychotic character to see and play as.

23. The landscapes and townscapes of this game were inspired by parts of Italy and Turkey.

24. Yuichiro Hiraki and his team of modelers struggled with Nero's physique due to what both Western and Eastern audiences prefer when it comes to a certain kind of male body. At first, Nero was really skinny (Eastern), then extremely muscular (Western). What's funny though is that when they made him really muscular, the audience still considered him as still being "too skinny", so they gave him a physique similar to DMC3 Dante's in the end, since it looked balanced and "average".

25. Besides originally being a goddess, Kyrie was originally going to be just a caregiver for children, while an unknown female character was going to be the songstress. But before the first trailer featuring Nero was aired, they replaced the original songstress with Kyrie, and made her as the songstress instead.

26. The boss battle with Agnus was going to be different, including his demon form. As you continue the battle with him, he would get more and more grotesque.

27. Credo was originally going to summon the Bianco and Alto Angelos for his boss fight.

28. According to Yuichiro Hiraki, if Kyrie wasn't a part of this game, Nero's personality would have been more like Vergil's. For example, he states, "She's his main connection to the human world and his only motivation to fight., like when he drop-kicks Dante because Kyrie's in danger. If Kyrie hadn't been there, he would've just put his headphones on and wandered off. "Not my business, not my problem.""

29. The design on Dante's devil trigger form's torso was inspired by the Los Illuminados insignia from Resident Evil 4.

30. The Sephirothic Fruit's concept is based off of the Physalis Alkekengi (aka Chinese Lantern and Japanese Lantern), which is seen as a symbol of life within death.

31. Dante's belt buckle design is either based off of his devil trigger form, a tiger, an Eastern dragon, a lion, or all of them.

32. According to Tatsuya Yoshikawa (one of the motion artists of this game), this game takes place in the present (ie. 2006, 2007 or 2008). But according to Hideaki Itsuno (director of DMC2, 3, and 4), it takes place in the 1980s. His reason for it being set in that generation is because he did not want to add high tech devices like computers and cellphones.

33. Despite the Saviour's outward appearance, his insides are made up of thousands of demons' souls, according to the 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts book.

34. The Scarecrows with the blades attached to their leg's poses are based off of the Drunken Monkey pose from martial arts.

35. The Basilisk's concept is based off of a revolver gun. The head is the bullets, the body is the revolver itself, and the tail is the firing hammer.

36. According to the Devil's Material Collection and 3, 1, 4, 2 Graphic Arts books, all Scarecrow enemies' skins are made up of scarecrow hide and children's stuffed toys and stuffed animals.

37. All of the main characters in this game are divided into threes. Nero, Kyrie and Credo are one group. Dante, Trish and Lady are the second group. And Sanctus, Agnus and Gloria are the third group.

38. On the bills that Lady gives to Trish and Dante, they have a picture of a young Reuben Langdon (Dante's voice actor), and Temi-Ni-Gru from the 3rd game.

39. Quite a bit of Nero's moveset names are based off of casino/gambling lingo. DMC2, 3, and 4 director, Morihashi Bingo, thought of Nero to be a 'sink or swim (aka just wing it)' type of character.

40. Throughout the original and special edition versions of this game, you will come across some DMC3 art work in some areas. They are only shown in Dante's office and Vergil's prologue.

41. The city of Fortuna exists. Just search for "Fortuna" on Google Maps.
